Visitation Information: Obituary: John E Bates 61, the best dad, papa John to grandkids, a great friend and the 'I know the answer' at the Fones Road Home Depot, said goodbye to Paula one last time and suddenly passed away at his beloved lake house on a sunny January 28th morning. John was born in Olympia on Feb 12, 1947 to Jack Broadus Bates and Louise Margaret Mitchell. John went to Garfield Grade School and Jefferson Jr High. He graduated from Olympia High School in 1965 where he spent a lot of time in the pool for the O.H.S. swim team. He then attended college at Central Washington University. John served in the Navy as a radio operator. He served in Viet Nam and received several service medals. He was excited about his military stints in Antarctica and New Zealand. John was a friend to all and always had a joke or a story to tell. He is famous and will be sorely missed among friends and family for bringing them together for an annual breakfast which he hosted and cooked. He loved to sail when he was younger and remained an avid baseball and Jimmy Buffet fan. John was remodeling his lake house and did most of the work himself. He was able to take a piece of wood and do just about anything with it. John has worked at Home Depot for the past 10+ years. He enjoyed teaching workshops at Home Depot, especially teaching children how to build small projects. The joy of John's life was his daughter Jessica. She give him some of his happiest moments in his life.
