Obituary:

SUSIE LEE HICKS ARMES

Susie Lee Hicks Armes passed away on Monday, July 11, 2005 at Roolan Lodge. She moved to the Olympia area in 2001 from Tennessee to be closer to her grandchildren. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Susie was born in rural Meigs County in East Tennessee on May 3, 1923, the fifth child of Lake and Edith Dixon Hicks. Susie’s early years were spent on the family farm near Athens, Tennessee. After completing high school, she was employed as a switchboard operator for the telephone company. In 1951 she married John D. Armes and continued working to finance graduate school for her husband. Susie’s only child, David, was born in 1954. She loved working and also held jobs as a bank teller and switchboard operator for an insurance company. After her retirement in the mid-1980’s, she and her husband relocated to Daytona Beach, Florida for a few years. They spent several years together after that in Crossville, Tennessee on the beautiful Cumberland Plateau.

In addition to her son, David, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Sharon Hurst-Armes and grandchildren Julian, Carey, and Charles, all of Olympia; sister-in-law Jean Hicks of Gas City, Indiana; sister-in-law Mary Lee Hicks of Marion, Indiana; sister-in-law Bonnie Raby of Oliver Springs, Tennessee; niece Judy Brown of Chattanooga, Tennessee (the daughter she never had); niece Glenda Beck of New York, NY; niece Leota Wallick of Oliver Springs, Tennessee; niece Aladene Blythe of Paso Robles, California; niece Melinda Yager of Harriman, Tennessee; nephew Hoyt Raby of Oliver Springs, Tennessee; best friend Annice Hardaway of Clarksville, Tennessee.

She is preceded in death by husband John D. Armes; brothers Walter, Hoyal and Willis; sisters Lorel and Ruth.

Special thanks for the great care provided by staff at Roolan Lodge and Providence Sound Home Care and Hospice during the last few months of Susie’s life.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Providence Sound Home Care and Hospice, PO Box 5008, Lacey, WA, 98509.
