Obituary:

Douglas F. Armitage, passed away May 17, 2006 at his home surrounded by his family. He embraced life and did things his way, but always with a true sense of right. He fought a courageous battle with lung cancer for two and half years under the excellent care of Dr. Kaplan and his team at Swedish Cancer Institute.

Doug is survived by his soul mate of 51 years, Helen, daughter and son-in-law Dianne and Gregg Probach, granddaughters Megan and Sydney Probach of Renton, WA. Also survived by his daughter, Lori Armitage, son-in-law Jim McGarva, and grandchildren Hannah, Teigan and Gavin Armitage, of Olympia, WA.

Doug was born in Calgary Alberta, CN in 1934. He and Helen were married December 23, 1954 and immigrated to the United States. They became citizens in 1971. He worked as a machinist at the Oakland Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Seattle Times and finally, The Olympian. He then was employed by the manufacturer of printing equipment and installed and serviced equipment in Northern California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska.

Together with John Bailey and Ed Neff and in conjunction with the Olympia Parks Dept. they formed the El Toro Sailing Club on Capital Lake. Doug was also one of the founding members of the South Sound Sailing Society as well. He was a life-long member of F&AM, Centralia Lodge.

Doug’s interests were many and varied. He was an avid reader. He took flying lessons. One of his greatest pleasures was flying to Oshkosh, Wisconsin with a friend in a Cesna and camping under the wing. At age 60 he took scuba diving lessons and delighted in diving in Hawaii. He enjoyed bicycling and participated in the Tour de Palm Springs. His daughters joined him in February, 2005 for his last Tour de Palm Springs ride. He loved to sail. He was a gifted woodworker. He loved music of all kinds and was self taught on harmonica, spoons, guitar and ukulele. He was always ready for a sing-a-long.

Doug was very proud of his Scot’s heritage and lived by his clan’s motto: Sans Peur (without fear). He will be greatly missed.

As Doug requested, there will be no funeral services. A private family ceremony spreading Doug’s ashes at sea will be performed. Memorial contributions may be made to: Henry Kaplan Research Foundation, 1221 Madison St., 2nd Floor, Seattle, WA 98104.
