Freda Dorothy Alkins

Freda D. Alkins, 81 of Olympia, made her transition on Friday, September 21, 2007 in her home.

She was born May 10, 1926 in Littleport, Cambridgeshire, England. She came to America in 1935 at the age of nine years. The daughter of Wilson and Julia Sparrow, she made her home with them in St. Maries, Idaho.

She is survived by her husband, The Reverend David S. Alkins, and three children; son, Wilson (Bill) Eyestone of Walla Walla; daughter, Judy J. Daugherty, Olympia; son, Jerry S. Eyestone of Yelm. Other survivors include three stepchildren; Peter and John Alkins, Olympia; and Mary Gehling, Wall Walla; as well as eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one sister, Julia Banyer, Norwich, England; and two nieces in Buckinghamshire, England.

Her joys were her family, home, friends, first graders, classical and sacred music. Before teaching in public school she was a volunteer braille transcriber and a Sunday School teacher for many years. She loved Bible/spiritual study, prayer/church and school activities.

Mrs. Alkins graduated from the University of Idaho in 1949 in Music Education. She continued her education in later life, meeting requirements for elementary classroom teaching. She taught first grade for 20 years, 17 of which were at South Bay School in the North Thurston School District.

She was a member of St. Benedicts Episcopal Church, Lacey; Daughters of the King; Daughters of the British Empire and Washington State Retired Teachers Association.

A memorial service will be held for Mrs. Alkins on Saturday, September 29th at 3:00 p.m. at St. Benedicts Episcopal Church, Lacey.
